Rather than thinking of best one should choose the right method depending on a range of factors and particular scenario. In case if you want to clean your carpet in the winter, use dry carpet cleaning rather than regular, as it prevents wetness. Properly performed under appropriate conditions, each method can provide satisfactory results.

The following are the most prevalent carpet cleaning methods. Let's start with the oldest form of modern carpet cleaning.

Shampooing Carpets
Professional shampooing method for carpet cleaning
This method has very good agitation and is best suited for low pile commercial carpet or low cut pile carpet that is highly soiled. In this cleaning method, detergent solution is released on the carpet through a rotary pad, whose rotary action converts the solution into foam and then it works into the carpet.  This method, unless it is used with some other type of carpet cleaning, has no extraction in the cleaning process but rather relies on vacuuming after the shampoo dries.

Carpet Steam Cleaning or Hot Water Extraction
Hot water extraction or steam cleaning method for carpet cleaning
It is the most preferred cleaning method, in this method, hot cleaning solution is sprayed under pressure onto the carpet and then extracted with a vacuum source.  The dirty solution is collected in a recovery tank and is usually poured into the sanitary waste system.  The advantage of this system is that it has the ability to flush out large amounts of soil and contaminants in carpet.

It is most preferred method because of its ability to remove more contaminants than the other carpet cleaning methods and the hot water extractions is favored by the Environment Protection Agency.

Bonnet Cleaning Carpet
Bonnet cleaning or carbonate cleaning method for carpet cleaning
This is a dry cleaning method generally it is used in the regular maintenance of commercial buildings. It is safe for most carpet fibers and does remove the top 1/3 carpet soil. In this method the cleaning product is mixed with the carbonated water and then this solution is sprayed on the carpet after this an absorber pad (bonnet) is used to scrub the carpet in a rotating fashion. The cleaning mixture and the carbonation works together to lift of particles.

This method has the advantage of drying very quickly because of the small amount of moisture used. The only real drawback of this method is that it often takes a long time to clean and that it usually only cleans the top one third of the carpet.

Dry Foam Cleaning

Dry foam cleaning method is almost very similar to shampooing, the only difference is that the solution is whipped into foam and applied right before the brushes instead of a liquid as in shampooing. This method requires that you do a lot of scrubbing and that should be in strong circular manner. Once dry, the residue containing suspended soil is simply vacuumed away. This method takes very low drying time.

Dry Powder Cleaning

This cleaning method is very similar to Bonnet cleaning method, it only cleans the top one third of the carpet. In this method a dry powder (sometimes small powdered corn cobs) is mixed with a cleaning solution. This mixture is spread out evenly over the carpet and then a round brush is used to scrub the powder into the carpet where dirt and grime is attracted to it. The powder is then vacuumed off and the carpet is ready to walk.
